Critic Reviews Drishyam

  • News 18 | Review By -Rajeev Masand Rating-7/10
When was the last time you enjoyed a film for its gripping plot, its compelling story? Drishyam, with its refreshingly original screenplay and its many moments of tension, is just that. Kamat's Hindi version pales in comparison to both the original Malayalam film and the Tamil remake, but the plot nevertheless keeps you hooked till the end.

Though the first half (that could do with a 10-minute trim) feels sluggish, the pace kicks in when Tabu, the hard-nosed cop enters. A suspense drama with a nail-biting finish, Drishyam holds the viewer by the eyeballs till its' engaging climax.

Finally, though, the film holds. In the way it unravels for us the street-smartness of a near-illiterate man intent on protecting his family at any cost, and how forgiveness can, sometimes, lead to a kind of acceptance. And in the way it delivers the stinging twist to the tale.

Don’t get me wrong, several parts of the film work and, for the most part, Drishyam motors along far more efficiently than most Hindi films -- but isn’t that too low a bar? Is it too much to ask for a ingenious, tight thriller?

Drishyam, a thriller that eschews the standard trappings of the suspense genre, is replete with surprises. Drishyam is gripping in parts but is anything but an unblemished humdinger.

Stunning, gripping, edge-of-the-seat, shocking, engrossing... use any of these adjectives for this Ajay Devgn version of Drishyam, and you are spot on. There is just one caveat: Don't compare it with the original in 2013 which had Mohanlal.

I believe the weakest link of ‘Drishyam’ is it’s direction. In handling stellar material & a pitch perfect original script (by Jeethu Joseph), Nishikant has fared as average at best. Using clich├ęs and reiterations so many times, the film’s core tension is diluted at way too many points.

With the sluggish first half in which Kamat gives Tabu a dramatic slo-mo entry, the more suspense-driven second half is a vast improvement. Kamat just about holds it together as he takes a will-they, won't-they approach to the Salgaonkars and engrosses viewers into their fate. Nonetheless, you'll be better off watching the Malayalam original.
