It is unfortunate how the film turned out given the expectations. RGV's first film in Kannada was only incidental to the hype. The real clincher for the Kannada film fans was the fact that Shiva Rajkumar was taking the lead in 'killing' Veerappan, the real-life villain to Rajkumar. Shivanna's character does not even have a name in the film, so, the few times when he takes the name of Rajkumar, saying he has personal enmity with Veerappan for abducting him, it sounds too cinematic.

It seems like Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Aag’ still has some catastrophic effect, as the level of expectations raised prior to the release of ‘Killing Veerappan’ and the final output (in terms of slain forest brigand’s life on the silver screen) results in a disappointing experience. The only sigh of relief for the audience is that of ‘Hat-Trick’ hero Dr Shivarajkumar avenging the kidnapping of his super star father Dr Rajkumar, on the big screen playing the smart spy cop.

Shot extensively in the forests, the film's interesting cinematography and the background complement each other. While it may seen a tad lengthy, the film provides yet another insight into the life of not just Veerappan but also the STF officers. The character portrayed by Rajesh Nataranga, for instance, shows how these vengeful officers can have everyday problems too. In fact, the performances enhance the sum total of the film.

Killing Veerappan has all the typical RGV elements. Loud, in your face, almost irritating background score; crooked camera angles where inane objects are in focus and the central characters remain out of focus for a woefully long time; and that favorite RGV shot whenever he shoots something in jungle, a snake passing in fronts of camera and people walking near it, completely unaware of its existence. Everything is there.

The movie depicts instances from the life of smuggler Veerappan and the mission of a group of police officers to kill him. Kannada audiences will be surprised to watch a never seen before Shivarajkumar, in the movie. A well-made film by Ram Gopal Varma, not to be missed by the audiences.
