Critic Reviews Pencil

  • Rediff | Review By -S Saraswathi Rating-3/10
The director cleverly weaves in the suspense, as more and more characters are caught in the dangerous web of Nitin’s manipulations. Except for the songs, the entire film has been shot in the school and debutant director Mani Nagaraj deserves credit for keeping the narrative brisk and entertaining. At two hours 16 minutes, Pencil is an engaging thriller with an interesting plot and good performances. Definitely worth a watch.

  • Behindwoods | Review By-BW Review Rating-5/10
The film has few genuine moments that evoke laughter, school memories and serious thoughts on the education process. There are however major portions of the film where one might feel that the director has not stayed true to the premise of the story. The plot fails to build substantial suspense and fizzles out with a short and unceremonious climax.

  • Times Of India | Review By -M Suganth Rating-4/10
Pencil could have been a thrilling whodunit but it also wants to be a message movie that rails against private educational institutions, and in trying to be both, it fails to be a satisfying film. And to make matters worse, its premise isn't wholly original as well, for it is inspired from the Korean thriller 4th Period Mystery.

  • Now Running | Review By -SMK Rating-4/10
Following a not-so-thrilling interval twist, the film gets trapped in the commercial formula with unheeded importance given to the needless supporting characters who are no way connected to the main plot. The climax is another long drawn affair that tests the patience of audiences. Overall, Pencil is an average whodunit crime thriller that takes its original source material for granted.

  • Chitramala | Review By -Vikram Guru Rating-5/10
First half of Pencil neither has edge of the seat thrilling elements or laughter moments. It just an okay first half. Second half is where Maaya and Shiva starts to know the real killer. Screenplay here is also not great. Inspection scenes written to generate comedy goes pale and fail to generate the expected level of comedy. To, sum up Pencil is a okay murder mystery.

  • 123 Telugu | Review By -123 Telugu Review Rating-6/10
Pencil is a decent murder mystery with an interesting premise and engaging screenplay. The suspense factor and second half are huge assets. If you are done watching all the important releases from last week, and are looking at something different, do check out ‘Pencil’ which ends up as a time pass thriller.

  • Filmi Beat | Review By -Avinash Gopinath Rating-5/10
Pencil performs better in the second half with adequate thrill moments and some fantastically written comedy sequences. The first half though is not up to the mark.Overall, Pencil could've been a better thriller had the director incorporated few more thrills and spills. Having said that, the movie has its moments, which makes it a decent thriller.
