Critic Reviews Oru Naal Koothu

  • Times Of India | Review By -M Suganth Rating-7/10
The director also does a good job capturing the work place environment of some of the characters. The dialogues are humorous and often sharp. The comedy by Bala Saravanan, who plays Raj's friend (given the support he lends to Raj, his nickname Shoulder feels apt), is forced into the narrative, but the actor makes the lines work with his timing and delivery.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Gautaman Bhaskaran Rating-6/10
A pleasing film after what seemed like several arid weeks, Nelson Venkatesan’s Oru Naal Koothu deals with the great Indian obsession called marriage. Three women are desperate to hook a husband, and through a neatly crafted work, the director spins a story that mercifully steers clear of theatrics and unnecessary verbiage.

  • Rediff | Review By -S Saraswathi Rating-6/10
The film is engagingly narrated in flashbacks that move seamlessly from one character to another. Interestingly, all the characters remain unconnected till the climax, when fate throws them together. There are no undue hysterics and the interesting screenplay with the simple yet compelling dialogues, beautiful music and solid performances make director Nelson’s Oru Naal Koothu worth a watch.

Balasaravanan provides the occasional laughter. Mia George does not have too much of talking to do, so has to convey all the emotions through her expression.  Even though all the leads have done their bit, one feels some of them could have emoted better, especially during few heart-rending scenes which look flat. ONK is a decent take on marriage alliances, but lacks an engaging screenplay.

  • The Hindu | Review By -Baradwaj Rangan
Oru Naal Koothu is the rare Tamil film that portrays human relationships as necessary, yet complicated. I walked out appreciating the director’s determination to not opt for easy happy endings. At this point, he’s better at character development than plot development — but that’s no small thing. And individual scenes are directed very well.

With his quirky plot, which has been narrated in an appealing manner, Nelson undoubtedly proves that he is a filmmaker with a substance. Overall, with an engaging screenplay, powerful dialogues backed by intense performances by the entire cast, alluring music, ONK is a film with a message and not to be missed.

All performances are flawless. Dinesh is an exception. Technically the movie is solid. Cinematography, Music and Editing are flawless. The Pre-wedding pressure was shown in a realistic manner. Credits goes to Nelson for handling it with subtle humour. Cinematographer Gokul showed each frame in a crystal clear fashion. The editing was flawless and Sabu.V.Joseph has done an exemplary job.
