Critic Reviews Nayagi / Nayaki

  • The Hindu | Review By -Srivathsan Nadadhur Rating-2/10
By the interval, you still have no clear reason behind the horror element beyond the ghost brushing her teeth, regularly singing ‘Sirimalle Puvva’ amidst posters of Geeta Dutt, Savitri and Sarada all over the house. The Trisha-starrer has hardly anything going for it in terms of performances or execution.

One intense climax sequence however will certainly make you laugh. Just FYI, It wasn't meant to be comedy. For a movie that is barely 2 hours long, Nayaki feels like it lasted a lifetime. Well, it's probably because, you're neither entertained, engaged nor intrigued. Just bored.

Even for a horror comedy, the premise of Naayagi feels flimsy. Even Brahmanandam, who appears in a cameo that doesn't do justice to his comic skills, cannot goad us into laughing. But unfortunately, we are actually tickled only during the scenes where petite Trisha is shown as a scary ghost.

I often wonder why writers and helmers underestimate audience intelligence, thrusting on to them plots that are so low on plausibility that even without one’s thinking cap, it is hard to digest. And must actors with promise -- like Krishnan and Ganesh Venkatraman (who plays a cinematographer) -- allow themselves to be part of such inanity?

The film runs for only 120 minutes, but it doesn't seem like that. Unnecessary songs and elongated slapstick comedy scenes could have been avoided. Though it is a Tamil - Telugu bilingual, there are few dubbing issues in the film. An age old template horror movie that fails to impress.

Nayaki is yet another film which has been made to just cash in on the craze of horror comedies. But sadly, neither its thrills or the comedy engrosses you for most of the film. Except for Trisha’s novel character, this film has nothing much to offer and ends up as a routine and predictable thriller which can be watched when it is aired on TV.

  • AP Herald | Review By -Common Man Rating-3/10
'Nayaki' is just another run-of-the-mill horror genre which has nothing new to offer. The same old camera angles and same old screenplay just annoy us. Trisha's glamour and 'Oomph' factor saved the movie. Music is also pretty sloppy. The movie is not even half-baked. It's high time, Tollywood wakes up with innovative screenplay.

  • Chitramala | Review By -Vikram Guru Rating-4/10
This movie is just to showcase talent of Trisha and cashing in horror comedy genre. Screenplay is largely predictable and the makers should have taken care of it. Whenever something different is tried in the routine content people respect them despite of the fate or result of the movie. To sum up, watch this movie if you are a Trisha fan and has extra bucks in your pocket.
