Critic Reviews Dharmadurai

  • Times of India | Review By -M Suganth Rating-6/10
There are quite a few moments in Dharmadurai (like the entire segment involving Anbuselvi) that convey what this director is capable of, but the synthetic sub-plots pull the film down and prevent it from becoming the emotional roller coaster that it should have been.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Gautaman Bhaskaran Rating-7/10
Dharmadurai may appear too simplistic in today’s complex world of intrigue and perfidy, may even been lambasted for veering towards the coincidental. Even a trifle preachy in parts. But it is a film that has been scripted with subtlety and helmed without the melodramatic. Overall, a far better Tamil work that I have seen in recent months, and I am going with a liberal 3.5 stars.

Seenu Ramasamy's dialogues are razor-sharp and adds solidity to the Dharma Durai. When it comes to the screenplay, Dharma Durai is fairly engaging with few dull moments, which includes the flashback portions. Overall, Dharma Durai is a neatly executed drama with a relevant message pertaining to a doctor's life who hails from a simple village.

Sethupathi in the titular role, hogs the limelight with his subtle yet riveting performance. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs and background score aid the proceedings exceedingly well.  Sukumar’s captivating camera angles and movements are laudable. Barring few dull moments, DD is a feel good drama worth a watch.

What takes the film down a notch is the screenplay, which appears a bit too smooth and lacks conviction at times. But an engaging screenplay generously peppered with humour, stunning music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, wonderful performances and the perfect rural ambiance make Seenu Ramasamy Dharmadurai a fun watch.

  • Behindwoods | Review By -BW Review Rating-5/10
Although the editing lacks crispiness at places, it does not seem like an issue. The plot loses its strong grip here and there but in no way does it lose its way. The movie unfurls itself at a slow pace but it is steady and justified. Overall, Dharmadurai is a decent rural flick which is pleasant to watch.

  • The Hindu | Review By -Baradwaj Rangan
Dharmadurai is filled with scenes that are hammered home long after the point is made. Had the director Seenu Ramasamy focused on just these story beats, he might have ended up with something as moving as his Neerparavai, which also dealt with alcoholism and star-crossed love. That sadly underappreciated film swept us along in a sea of emotions. Dharmadurai leaves us dry-eyed, despite much potential for drama.

  • Cinema Glitz | Review By -Sajid Rating-7/10
Seenu Ramasamy, had a great flavour for an emotional drama, which was well balanced without going overboard. That made DD a travel which gives a mellow feel. The film doesn’t preach but brings out the message in a subtle way. Definitely worth a watch, a feel good film in long time. Don’t miss it.

  • AP Herald | Review By -Siva Kumar Rating-6/10
'Dharmadurai' is a rural village drama which may cater to audience of all ages. The first half is more of drama and second half moves fast with little commercial elements. The movie just has one fight scene and that is shot neat and realistic manner. Songs are the biggest plus and Seenu Ramasamy has extracted the best from Yuvan. Tamannaah and Vijay Sethupathi can be proud of doing such a movie.
