Critic Reviews M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

  • Times of India | Review By -Renuka Vyavahare Rating-7/10
However the biopic loses its momentum in the second half with Dhoni’s love life getting undue prominence. As a full-fledged biopic, this one-dimensional approach towards the lead character leaves you a tad discontented. But since you see the film through Dhoni’s eyes, it’s justified as one rarely sees faults in oneself.

The film is overlong and far from perfect. But climaxing with Dhoni’s incredible performance in the 2011 World Cup, Pandey pushes all the right buttons and leaves you, your chest swelling with pride. So even though your head knows this is far from a no-holds-barred, warts-and-all biopic, your heart is happy to settle.

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is an odd biopic, a rousing rags-to-riches story that happens also to be a hagiographical picture of a flawless protagonist. Rajput steps forward and tonks it out of the park, but it would matter much more if this wasn't an exhibition match on a conveniently doctored pitch.

But post interval, the narrative loses its drive. By now, the story is already stretched to breaking and our patience is wearing thin. The songs only add to the length. The bigger problem is that the narrative stops giving us an insight into the man.

  • Indian Express | Review By -Shubhra Gupta Rating-4/10
This film had potential to present us with the recent Indian cricketing story, warts and all. Sadly it’s more hagiography than biography: the cricketer is reduced to a being singing-dancing Bollywood hero rather than a top-flight cricketer, a master strategist, and a captain who led from the front.

  • NDTV | Review By -Saibal Chatterjee Rating-4/10
The film, though intolerably long, is competently executed. It has a stellar performance from Sushant Singh Rajput, some moments of hilarity, a dash of tragedy and a clutch of strong supporting actors. But overall, the film does not mirror the Indian stumper's batting style. It is neither strikingly unconventional nor particularly effective.

Dhoni's biopic is an exercise in eulogising the cricketer, telling people how great this man is. Over a span of more than three hours, the greatness of Dhoni plays in front of you. MS Dhoni The Untold Story doesn't address any grey areas in Dhoni's life. And when it's got cricket and MS Dhoni as the subject, who cares about problems in a film.

First half is long but is forms the base for the story. The second half is not gripping until the climax that takes us back to the World cup win. M.S.Dhoni -The Untold Story is certainly a must-watch if you’re a fan of Indian cricket. Get to know the man behind the composed, confident, match-finisher of Indian cricket team.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Rohit Vats Rating-6/10
The director has silver-wrapped the facts that are mostly known. But, you have to give to Pandey to keep it intriguing enough for you to get hooked throughout the three hours. Unquestionably entertaining. Also, it’s the role of a lifetime for Sushant, and he has aced it.

Overall, the film is a must watch for every cricket lover because it aptly tells the tale of an extraordinary man. The struggles are real and so is Sushant's acting. There isn't any shocking revelation, just inspiration and determination of a born talent who along with right people by his side, became the legendary captain.

  • India Today | Review By -Suhani Singh Rating-5/10
But with a physically committed and emotionally measured performance by Sushant Singh Rajput and enough untold and lighter moments, MS Dhoni manages to give us a glimpse into the cricketer albeit only till 2011. The movie may not bowl you over, but it is an inspiring tale which reminds you that the road to success is mostly long.

The production values strive to be as realistic as it gets, aided considerably by Sudhir Paisane’s cinematography which frequently banks on natural lighting. Above all, Sushant owns the film, incarnating the cricket star by not being cussedly imitative. Thanks to Rajput and the film’s first-half, the film hits a boundary. In a word, see.

The film is well-written and well-staged. All the scenes with his family and friends connect so persuasively, and so often. Watch it if you love cricket. Watch it if you love movies. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story leaves you with a high that only a winning match can give you.

Screenplay by Neeraj Pandey and Dilip Jha is very engaging in the first half of the film. The movie ends on a high with Dhoni’s six at Wankhede stadium and it does give you goose bumps. Tight screenplay and good performances makes this one a good watch.

  • Bollywood Life | Review By -Sreeju Sudhakaran Rating-7/10
The film ends with 2011 World Cup final match, where Dhoni hits that brilliant six to seal the deal. If you loved that moment and the man who made that moment real, then MS Dhoni: The Untold Story should be your weekend watch. Also the fact that it is Sushant Singh Rajput‘s best film to date.

  • Gulf News | Review By -Manjusha Radhakrishnan Rating-6/10
But what elevates the patchy screenplay in the second half is Rajput’s charismatic performance. Give this film a shot for Rajput and the sturdy support that the supporting cast gives him. While this may not be Pandey’s best Bollywood innings, it’s definitely watchable.

  • Bollywood Hungama | Review By -BH Review Rating-8/10
M.S. DHONI: THE UNTOLD STORY hits it out of the park with a huge six on the account of its engaging narrative and a brilliant screenplay. In a nation where Bollywood and cricket are considered as religion, the amalgamation of both will work wonders at the Box-Office, setting new records. Don’t miss it for anything in the world.
