Critic Reviews Devi(L)

  • Times of India | Review By -M Suganth Rating-6/10
Given that we have been seeing a spate of horror comedies for the past few years, it is a pleasant surprise that Devi(L) feels unique. As he did with Saivam, Vijay gives us a story that is quite simple and at the same time empathetic.

Editor Anthony maintains a rapid pace and the director has kept it simple with no over-the-top fight sequences, needless sentiment or being too preachy. At just over two hours with good performances, great music and some fun moments, Devi is a passable entertainer that keeps you engaged.

Manush Nandhan’s camera goes well with the mood of the film. On the downside, the film has a heavy Hindi dubbed feel. Nevertheless, good performances combined with neat presentation makes Devi an entertaining fare.

The fulcrum of the film, though, is the way in which the ghost is portrayed – and that, for me, was craftily worked out by a director whose earlier offerings have been a tad too saccharine. Maybe Devi is Vijay’s way of saying he can do pei-sa vasool entertainers too.

Devi works well for its humor, performance of the cast and the engrossing narration. Prabhu Deva making a comeback after a long time is also something to check out for and at the end of the film, we do wish that we get to see him more often on screen. A wholesome ghost story that engages and entertains.

  • Cinema Glitz | Review By -Sajid Rating-6/10
The film is infused with good comedy which is quite genuine giving the audience a good laugh. And it is perfectly supported by its lead cast Prabhudeva and Tamannaah. Definitely worth a watch, as it comes out a decent entertainer among the other two releases this Pooja holidays.
