Critic Reviews Rock On 2

  • News 18 | Review By -Rajeev Masand Rating-4/10
The performances are adequate at best, and the picture-postcard photography of Meghalaya is refreshing. But as you leave the cinema in the end, you can’t help missing the distinct sense of fun that the earlier film delivered…and yes, those infectious tunes. I’m going with two out of five for Rock On 2. It’s an opportunity lost.

Also, the script is a major downer. It is way too contrived, directionless and morose to hold your interest. With no strong conflict point to hold it all together, the story goes haywire. The narration tries too hard to manipulate your feelings and spoon-feed emotions by explaining the unsaid thoughts of the characters, depriving you the joy of discovering it for yourself.

So there are elements that you will enjoy, but the film is felled by the undercooked writing. The dialogue by Farhan Akthar doesn’t help to disguise the flaws. The Meghalaya angle is, of course, entirely superficial. The local characters are paper-thin and we get little sense of their world.

  • Rediff | Review By -Raja Sen Rating-3/10
Rock On 2 is a mediocre film. It is far too emo, with a hideous subplot about an aspiring musician rejected by his classical musician father, one who wears a shawl as committedly and constantly as Thakur did in Sholay.

  • NDTV | Review By -Saibal Chatterjee Rating-5/10
A musical drama sans a particularly strong score is a like a painter's blank canvas daubed with dull greys. And that precisely is the problem with Rock On 2. It rocks only sporadically, and it almost never sways the audience enough for the latter to crave for another helping.

But the sequel doesn't feel like it's about the same guys any more, the headway in the script is marked by contrivances not progression. Rock On 2’s frantic mood shifts between art, commerce, philanthropy, politics and personal life weigh down its potential to satisfy on a single front.

To carp that Rock On 2 lacks the freshness and funky drive of its prequel would amount to stating the obvious. Suffice it to say, the sequel isn’t exactly a feast for the ears and the mind, in that order. Unsolicited tip: Re-re-see the old Rock On on DVD or wherever, and be happy.

  • India Today | Review By -Ananya Bhattacharya Rating-4/10
Rock On 2 scores high in the cinematography and photography departments. In terms of making an impact on its viewers, Rock On 2 will do nothing. The one thing it will do is boost the Meghalaya tourism. In all, watch Rock On 2 for the picturesque locales of Meghalaya. Else skip it.

Rock On 2 movie review: The Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor is ready to break into a song every time the film sags. However, it’s hard to decipher what those songs are saying as they flounder in their own depth.

Rock On 2 might not have a strong conflict in the storyline, but it definitely works as the narrative of a unique camaraderie among the boys. They have grown older, but haven’t lost their charm.

  • Koimoi | Review By -Surabhi Redkar Rating-4/10
The script of Rock On 2 fails miserably at establishing anything. In an attempt to show the lead characters matured, what we get to see is another level of immaturity. I’d say you would rather give this one a miss. Rock On 2 might have been a great concept on paper, but it just doesn't become the sequel we all expected. Instead revisit the original and head bang to those tunes.

Rock On 2 is like that stomach ache we get for liking a chocolate and then splurging too much on it. Magik may have returned, but the original magic is sorely missing. Avoid, if you don’t wanna get disappointed.

As far as performances go, every one does their bit but they are let down by a confused storyline. Watch this only if you are a Rock On groupie, otherwise skip it.

  • Bollywood Hungama | Review By -BH Review Rating-3/10
On the whole, ROCK ON 2 has no story, no good music and no entertainment value. With its slow paced narrative, limited buzz and the demonetisation move by the Indian Government, the film will be a disaster at the Box-Office.
