Critic Reviews Badrinath Ki Dulhania

  • Times of India | Review By -Nihit Bhave Rating-7/10
This is a story with an obvious climax, so sitting through two and a half hours to find out what you already know might get uncomfortable. But the breezy vibe of the movie and back-to-back hilarious lines should get you through it.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania has its heart in the right place, but its writing is often clumsy. There is a lot to appreciate here, but it’s also overlong and made me restless. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

  • Indian Express | Review By -Shubhra Gupta Rating-6/10
A couple of times, the film’s let’s hear-it-for-the-ladies comes off as simplistic, but overall, the film works as a flavoursome romance with a pair which grows into each other, and with each other.

  • NDTV | Review By -Saibal Chatterjee Rating-4/10
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a pulpy, uneven romantic caper that strives to pass itself off as a mellow tale of patriarchy, love, honour and ambition set in small-town India and couched in doses of humour. Neither the mush nor the air of mirth can pull it out of the trough it digs for itself.

  • Film Companion | Review By -Anupama Chopra Rating-6/10
Badrinath ki Dulhania should have been tighter.  There are moments in the second half when it feels like Shashank has run out of ideas. Does every romance need a Badshah club song?

  • Rediff | Review By -Raja Sen Rating-6/10
All the storytelling tropes seem familiar in Badrinath Ki Dulhania but Khaitan consistently veers away from the expected.

  • The Hindu | Review By -Namrata Joshi
However, the script loses direction and becomes one big inane hodgepodge, particularly in the interminable second half. Things go dreary and lacklustre beyond a point, especially with the silly kimono—kameeno word play.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Rohit Vats Rating-5/10
But Khaitan loses his grip before the high-voltage finale. In the end, he submits to cheesy-funny ‘dialoguebaazi’. That could help him in evoking some whistles, but it dilutes the purpose of featuring an ‘emancipated woman’.

  • Spotboye | Review By -Khalid Mohamed Rating-5/10
Conclusion: For Mr Dhawan, Ms Bhatt and the effort to be cause-oriented, Badrinath ki Dulhani gets half-a-star above average. Go for it, especially if you’re game for shuddering for 140 minutes  under a multiplex blanket.

But treading the fine line between preachy and peachy, this one keeps you intermittently entertained and interested in the proceedings, even while the shallow attempt at female empowerment seems a bit jaded.

At the end of the day, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is only a popcorn social. It is mild in its criticism, doesn't entangle itself in too many heavy or deep debates and neatly tidies up all the problematic ends through simplistic, frothy solutions.

  • Deccan Chronicle | Review By -Rohit Bhatnagar Rating-6/10
Overall, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a one time watch which has humour, social message, good looking actors and high degrees of emotions.

  • DNA | Review By -Tushar Joshi Rating-6/10
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is light, entertaining and likeable. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt prove that on screen chemistry can be enough sometimes to keep you engaged in an average plot with a predictable narrative.

But just like a big fat Indian wedding, there’s a bit of colour, dance, music and loads of drama thrown into Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Take the plunge with Dhawan and Bhatt. Their combined acting skills and comic timing will make it an enjoyable affair.
