Critic Reviews Marudhu / Maruthu

  • Behindwoods | Review By -BW Review Board Rating-4/10
Technical side of Marudhu is just about ordinary.  The songs are functional. Anal Arasu’s action choreography is good. To cut to the chase, Marudhu could work for audiences who like to watch a rural masala flick with a lot of action. One more rural flick riding high on melodrama and violence.

Cinematography by Velraj is excellent, but the loud, over-the-top music by D Imman seems to dramatize every situation. With a rather ordinary script and unremarkable execution, coupled with the endless chasing scenes, the excessive violence and melodrama, director Muthaiya’s Marudhu only gives you a headache.

  • Filmi Beat | Review By -Avinash Gopinath Rating-6/10
Vishal steals the show with his crisp dialogue delivery and a carefree body language. With his toned body and apt costumes, he looks perfect as a loadman. While the first half is engaging with right mix of action, sentiment, romance and a terrific interval block, the latter half gets a tad slow with a predictable climax. Director Muthiah is back doing what he does best. Marudhu, with all the necessary commercial elements, will win over the majority of audiences.

  • Times Of India | Review By -M Suganth Rating-6/10
What keeps us engaged is the way in which the director withholds information in the first half and reveals them gradually in the second. Once we begin to understand the characters' motivations (like, why did Maruthu's grandmother want him to fall in love with Bakkiyam), we become a bit more invested in the outcome of the story. And there is an assuredness in how Muthaiah narrates this formulaic tale that keeps us from getting bored.

  • The Hindu | Review By -Baradwaj Rangan
The film is very long, very talky. It tries to create some dramatic tension by revealing things slowly – for instance, why Maruthu’s grandmother wanted him to fall in love with Bhagyam, or why Bhagyam visits the hospital when Maruthu is being treated for an injury. But the effort on paper does not translate to screen.

When it comes to the technical stuff, Marudhu scores high. Velraj’s cinematography is irresistibly pleasant and arresting. Imman’s composition is a mixed bag: songs are functional and a bit too distracting. The background music though hits the mark. All the same, he could have toned down the excessive violence.
