Critic Reviews Waiting Movie

  • Times Of India | Review By -Mohar Basu Rating-7/10
It is commendable that director Anu Menon has whipped up a warm tale about love, loss and surviving life's catastrophic blows, with such simplicity. However, the writing wears thin in the latter half. Shiv's big revelation was unnecessary and the writers seemed unsure how to end it for Tara. And yet, none of it matters. For Kalki and Naseer's effortless performances, this movie deserves to be watched.

Despite its problems – and there are a few – Waiting is well worth your time. It sags post intermission, and the plotting is weak. But it raises important questions about life, love, and letting go. Plus there are those two splendid performances. That’s plenty to merit a viewing. I’m going with three out of five.

Director Anu Menon’s Waiting, a tender tale of love and letting go, recognises this largely neglected sentiment and builds its premise around two strangers bonded by despair. Despite its sombre setting, the mood is far from brooding. Waiting communicates normalcy around the given trauma in ways as genuine as one’s need to breathe.

The second half of the movie is rather long with the narrative becoming slightly stagnant. The writing wears thin in parts here. The movie does require you to be patient, but it's a rewarding experience. Watch this sensitive tale for Naseer and Kalki's brilliant performances.

Waiting is a clear sign of mint-fresh direction. Lovable and relatable characters etched into a fine story makes this one a great slice of a life film! Waiting is a delightful film that breaks the norms of soppy emotional dramas to present something real. For the stellar performances by Kalki and Naseerduddin Shah, I am going with a 3.5/5 for the film.

From the backwaters to the wide lush green roads, Neha Parti Matiyani beautifully captures the beautiful city of Kochi. Post making a love story like 'London Paris New York', director Anu Menon has surely surprises the audience with this hard hitting yet emotional film. If you are willing to watch a sensible film with soul, 'Waiting' is definitely a good pick this weekend!

  • NDTV | Review By -Saibal Chatterjee Rating-7/10
An understated and superbly acted film about loss, grief and the human need to cling on to the physical presence of loved ones, Anu Menon's Waiting is at once heart-wrenching and uplifting. Kudos to director Anu Menon for creating an authentic Kochi milieu with the aid of minor characters who nail the local accent without turning into caricatures. Waiting is beautiful and believable, a well-chiselled marvel.

Two people, waiting. This is an apt one-line description of a film about life, lasting love and impending loss which explores a zone Bollywood doesn’t bother with. Which is itself so refreshing that you want to champion the attempt, as well some of the outcome, even if it doesn’t hit all the marks, all the way.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Sweta Kaushal Rating-7/10
Menon captures deep philosophies of life in extremely subtle moments. Packaged with Naseeruddin as the adorable old man struggling to understand a younger generation and Kalki as the charming young, energetic woman, Waiting is a delight. Powerful performances and a realistic approach make this a film you’d want to watch.

  • Mid Day | Review By -Shubha Shetty Saha Rating-7/10
Anu Menon's 'Waiting' is a sensitive, unusual story. The movie tracks the behavioural pattern of two individuals belonging to two different generations when their lives comes to a standstill in a hospital waiting room. The film gives a strange sense of comfort as it begins. A script so beautifully rare, 'Waiting' makes you happy when it begins.
