Critic Reviews Rustom

  • Times of India | Review By -Renuka Vyavahare Rating-6/10
To cut to the chase, despite its multiple flaws, Rustom can be watched for Akshay Kumar, whose action/comic brilliance often overshadows his acting prowess. He reminds you to value the honest officers who serve our country with dignity and valour. He makes you want to support the man who probably did the right thing the wrong way.

But most unforgivably, Rustom sacrifices the complexities of the Nanavati case for the sake of facile drama. In the end, Pavan Malhotra is typically dependable in the role of the investigating police officer, and Akshay Kumar shows some flair. They are the sole bright spots in Rustom, which is too long, wholly disappointing, and feels like an opportunity lost. I’m going with a generous two out of five.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Anupama Chopra Rating-4/10
Rustom is brave enough to give us a man who is so evolved that he understands and forgives his errant wife. But instead of exploring the dynamics of this, we get lost in heroism, corruption and courtroom dramatics. And truthfully, the only thing Parsi about Akshay is his character’s name. Rustom is an opportunity lost.

  • NDTV | Review By -Saibal Chatterjee Rating-5/10
Akshay’s cool, calm, composed avatar is bound to floor many, and not just his ardent fans. There is little in this film that could displease the actor’s constituency. Rustom is largely inoffensive, even passable in the main, but could have been infinitely better had the screenplay not been so utterly conventional and unimaginative.

  • India Today | Review By -Ananya Bhattacharya Rating-6/10
The weakest part of Rustom is the treatment of the story. Despite emphasising that the film is a fictionalised account, and doesn't bear any resemblance to anything real, the film is all about the Nanavati case. The problem with Rustom lies in its twists too. You can put your finger on them much before the twists actually play out in front of you, something which is fatal for a 'crime thriller'.

  • Gulf News | Review By -Manjusha Radhakrishnan Rating-5/10
Watch this film if you want to see Kumar in all his noble glory. If you look carefully, perhaps a halo might even emerge from this honourable man. But if you are anything like me, this film would have benefitted hugely from exploring the cracks in his relationships.

  • Koimoi | Review By -Surabhi Redkar Rating-6/10
Rustom’s story has been crafted well with good twists, turning points. The cinematic liberties that the makers have taken are clearly crowd-pleasing and in the lieu to pack this film as an entertaining watch. Rustom is a one-time watch. For those who just want to catch a flick without its relation to Nanavati case, it makes up for a decent watch. I plead guilty that I suggest this film!

  • Rediff | Review By -Raja Sen Rating-2/10
It is a case, in short, that deserves good cinema. Cinema that, like any intelligent murderer, understands that it is indeed all in the details. Despite Kumar's valiant attempt at calm and gravitas, this film is bilge, unintentionally hilarious and eventually tedious. The only way to salvage it would be to add a too-loud laugh track, give Gupta a trampoline, and call it Carry On Rustom.

  • Mid Day | Review By -Shaheen Parkar Rating-6/10
With some tight editing, especially in the second half when the court scenes become a drag, it would have made for a more riveting watch. A great deal of attention has been paid to the detailing and production values, and that's commendable, and so is the direction. 'Rustom' is worth a watch for Akshay's sake.

  • Bollywood Life | Review By -Sreeju Sudhakaran Rating-6/10
Rustom is not a bad film in essence, however a little more conviction in the narrative could have made it one of the best courtroom dramas of all time. Watch it purely for Akshay Kumar or watch it if you want to know the basic skeleton of the Nanavati case (if you are too lazy to read its Wikipedia page).

  • Deccan Chronicle | Review By -Mehul S Thakkar Rating-6/10
the movie has a clear intention of entertaining the audiences. Believe it or not, the most intense scenes in the court room have been turned around into a comic affair. While this works in some scenes, it falls flat as it mostly comes across as over-dependent. All in all, 'Rustom' is a one time watch for Akshay Kumar.

  • Hindustan Times | Review By -Rohit Vats Rating-6/10
But not everything in Rustom is proportioned right. Lousy special effects and the language of certain characters are a few things that warp the authentic feel of the movie. Yet, somehow Rustom doesn’t falter, except when you realise the movie two and a half hours long. Akshay Kumar ensures that you root for Rustom Pavri. After Holiday, Baby and Airlift, it’s one more step for his brand of patriotism. It’s an intriguing film for sure.

  • DNA | Review By -Sarita Tanwar Rating-6/10
Rustom is emotionally nuanced, and the treatment is serious and thoughtful. As it progresses, it provides a shift in perspective to keep you guessing. Rustom could have been a remarkable piece of work but is bogged down by cliches. Overall, Rustom is a thoroughly absorbing and surprisingly entertaining., check it out.

  • Masala | Review By -Lokesh Dharmani Rating-5/10
I loved the detailing in the film. They have created an almost perfect world of 1960s. The naval ships, the furniture, the sets, even that Godrej fridge in the kitchen, everything in the film is detailed so well. Rustom despite having an interesting plot tries to play safe, please everyone and resorts to Bollywood formulae of forced humour and even more forced insipid songs.

  • Indian Express | Review By -Shubhra Gupta Rating-3/10
The treatment leaches all complexity from the film. It lies supine on the screen, flattened further by the way the characters come and go. Characters interact with each other in a stiff rehearsed manner, and by the second half, when the film shifts to the fight in the court, and turns into a procedural, it becomes flat-out dull.

  • Bollywood Hungama | Review By -BH Review Rating-6/10
RUSTOM happens to be Tinu Suresh Desai's second film as a director (his first being 1920 LONDON). Tinu Suresh Desai has done a decent job as a director. The film's music is pretty average. The film's cinematography is decent, if not superlative. On the whole, RUSTOM comes across as a well crafted crime thriller that meets expectations. It has its share of captivating moments as well as the loose ones.
